Everything to Know about Tears of the Kingdom
Tears of the Kingdom is the direct sequel to 2017’s The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and sees players once again take on the role of Link, a brave knight who saved the kingdom of Hyrule from a terrible fate. In this Sequel, Ganondorf has returned to wreak havoc on Hyrule again. With the world in disarray following Ganondorf’s return, huge land masses have ascended to the sky, and powerful enemies and challenges have once again called for Link’s abilities and powers. Only the Hero of Hyrule can rescue the princess and truly free the kingdom from a terrible fate.
Players will have plenty to do in Tears of the Kingdom, as Link’s new adventure will take him across a reshaped Hyrule, with the land, skies, and undergrounds all waiting to be explored. There are tons of new locations and puzzles to solve, and abilities to unlock.
What to Do First in Tears of the Kingdom
With the sheer size and scale of Tears of the Kingdom, it’s understandable that players will be unsure where to start or what to do first. We recommend that once you finish the tutorial area and are in Hyrule, head to Lookout Landing and follow the main story until you finish Purah’s questline. This will give you access to the Paraglider like in Breath of the Wild and make exploring the world of Hyrule much easier.
We also recommend you favor hearts over stamina for the early parts of the game, since the game doesn’t pull many punches and you’ll be dealing with strong enemies relatively early, so it will give you some more survivability. Similarly, be sure to pick up the Hylian Armor found in Lookout Landing to give you some extra defense. As for weapons, you can head to Hyrule Castle to get yourself some high-power gear, which is possible thanks to the Lookout Landing Skyview Tower and some stamina food and elixirs.
Beyond that, it’s really up to you where you want to explore and what you want to do, but these few tips can help make your adventure a little easier when you first jump into the game.
What Are Fans and Critics Saying About Tears of the Kingdom?
The reception to Tears of the Kingdom has been overwhelmingly positive. As of writing the game is sitting on a 96 on Metacritic and has been inundated with high review scores, a majority being 10/10. The game goes for user scores, which are sitting at 8.7, with over 3500 positive reviews.
Many have praised its wealth of content and focus on player creativity and exploration, building upon the already excellent foundation that its 2017 predecessor Breath of the Wild created. It also has been praised for its great story, characters, and quality of life improvements. It’s very clear to many players and fans that Tears of the Kingdom have some serious game-of-the-year potential.
What’s the difference between BotW and TotK?
There are some notable differences between the two games, namely the size, and scale of their worlds. Breath of the Wild was already the biggest world we had seen in a Zelda title, but Tears of the Kingdom has taken that title and expanded the world massively. As well as the lands of Hyrule, players can explore the skies above the kingdom on the Sky Islands, massive chunks of land suspended high above Hyrule, each with unique challenges and rewards for players to find. Additionally, the has expanded into the underground of Hyrule with the Depths. a series of caves and underground areas that boost tons of challenges and rewards for players who dare to dive into them.
Players also have a wealth of new abilities compared to Breath of the Wild, including the Ultrahand ability, which lets players combine objects into unique creations such as flying machines and vehicles to use during their adventures. They also have Fuse, which combines weapons and materials together to make them more powerful and offers unique effects, Ascend to jump through roofs, caves, and cages and appear on the other side, and Recall to rewind an object in time.
On top of that, there are tons of new materials, weapons, armor, and Zonai Deivces, the unique mechanical elements players can use to create outlandish tools, vehicles, and objects to find and discover. Add to that new stories, quests, and characters, and you have a wholly different and expanded version of Hyrule for players to enjoy in Tears of the Kingdom.
