Total War: Three Kingdoms will be getting a new mode on August 8. Dynasty Mode, developed in partnership with Intel, is a new horde mode where you will pit three of your heroes in a fight against hordes of enemies. You pick three heroes and then enter into a battle against ever-increasing waves of enemies.

In partnership with Intel, the mode will “take extra advantage of your hardware to render larger and larger unit sizes depending on your PC’s spec.” The aim of the game here is to bring three heroes that will complement each other, allowing you to quickly decimate your enemies, and survive to the next round. The mode can be played solo, or with two other friends, which is a nice touch.

The mode will also exist within its own unique bracket about game balance. Characters will be as powerful as legends, even more than in the game’s Romance mode, while enemies will fall to a single blow. The mode is designed to be a fun representation of the power of these mighty heroes in myth and legend from the Three Kingdoms era. The heroes will also have new abilities that will allow them to heal each other, or destroy huge numbers of enemies. You will also be able to upgrade them to increase your power further.

Enemy waves grow bigger each time, and each third wave will have heroes of their own. If you kill these heroes, you can get extra upgrades. You can also scale the wave sizes, increasing enemy unit sizes by up to 600%. That will put it firmly into benchmark mode for a lot of people, but the option is nice to have.

Points are awarded every time you damage an enemy unit, kill an enemy unit or cause them to retreat, and at the end of the wave. A destroyed enemy unit is worth 1000 points, and depending on how fast you finish a wave, another 20,000 points is up for grabs.

The mode sounds like a weird mix of a relaxed horde mode and benchmark test, and I am looking forward to seeing it in action.
