May you be the force.
Respawn Entertainment’s debut Stars Wars game, Jedi: Fallen Order has been presented at EA’s E3 event EA Play, showcasing the gameplay that fans can expect to see on release.
The 15 minutes of gameplay showed about three hours into the game set on Kashyyyk, starting as a padawan. The gameplay showed some 3rd person platforming, including wall-running that was similar to their Titanfall games, and several uses for force powers, including time bending and door smashing. The game also uses a holomap as a way to navigate around, and it appears to have plenty of set pieces to it. Bosses also appear to be a part of the game, while quick-time events will keep players on their toes.
From the looks of the gameplay, which looks very detailed and runs at 60 FPS with fluid animation even in the alpha build, it seems to be using an engine that isn’t EA’s in-house Frostbite. The fluidity seems to be reminiscent of the Source engine, which is what was used for their other active project, Apex Legends.
Gaming personality Greg Miller, Respawn CEO Vince Zampella and Game Director Stig Asmussen presented the game. They also confirmed that the game is canon to the Star Wars universe.
The new game announced in a crowded interview at last year’s EA Play with studio head Zampella is the first by EA to utilise the Star Wars license in a solo adventure game. Visceral Games had previously been working on one with Naughty Dog’s former creative director Amy Hennig, who had directed the critically acclaimed original three Uncharted titles, at the helm but was shelved after EA closed the studio in 2017.
God of War III Director Asmussen is leading the project, while the game is being written by Aaron Contreras, whose previous works include Far Cry III, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag and most recently Mafia III. Zampella also has plenty of experience in single player campaigns, with Titanfall 2’s story receiving high praise, while also being part of Infinity Ward during the release of the first two Call of Duty Modern Warfare games.
The game is the first time that developer Respawn Entertainment has made a game outside of their Titanfall franchise, with two mainline Titanfall games, and battle royale Apex Legends, which is based on the Titanfall universe. They have also been simultaneously developing more content for the latter, having launched the free-to-play title back in early February.
The game is due to be released on PS4, Xbox One and PC on November 15.
