According to a tweet from Derek Yu, Spelunky 2 is unlikely to release until next year.
Spelunky 2, Derek Yu’s follow up to the indie smash hit Spelunky, is unlikely to release this year. In a recent tweet, Derek Yu confirmed the delay, saying that the game required more work before it was ready to release.
Hey, Spelunky fans! Unfortunately, I don’t think we’re going to get to release Spelunky 2 this year. Development is still going well and we’re not far off target, but the density and detail of the game is demanding more time.

Spelunky is a massive indie hit launched in 2008. The game initially launched as freeware for Windows then was remade for the Xbox 360 in 2012, and later arrived on PS3 in 2013. Things went full circle when the remade version got ported back to Windows.
A critical success, the game received rave reviews and various awards. Spelunky involves exploring different underground areas, finding routes through the maze-like levels, and finding as much treasure as you can. Maps have enemies everywhere that you need to combat with items you find during your run. Levels are randomly generated to provide an ever-changing challenge, and the game has a high difficulty.
Spelunky 2 is almost sure to be a critical and commercial success. But it is good to see the developer not putting themselves under too much pressure to release on certain death. Crunch, even for small teams, is a common problem in the industry. We’re sure anyone interested in the game is willing to wait a little bit longer to get their hands on it.
