Paramount released the first trailer for the Sonic the Hedgehog movie this morning, giving the world its first look at the blue speedster in action.

Sonic the Hedgehog is set to release in theaters this November, starring Ben Schwartz (DuckTales, Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) as Sonic and Jim Carrey (Bruce Almighty) as Dr. Robotnik.

In the film, Sonic comes to Earth from another planet and finds himself in a small town in the northwestern United States aptly named Green Hills, according to the movie’s IMDb page. When he lands, he accidentally knocks out power in part of the country, prompting the U.S. government to launch a mission to find out what happened. As Dr. Robotnik takes over the operation, Sonic must team up with new friend Tom Wachowski (played by James Marsden, Westworld) to save the planet from the doctor’s plan for world domination.

Neal H. Moritz will work as the producer for Sonic the Hedgehog, bringing his Fast and the Furious franchise experience with him. As such, the movie should be filled with plenty of fast-paced chases and intelligent action sequences. Gaming fans should be rooting for Moritz to make Sonic a success, as IMDb says he is also slated to produce a Sleeping Dogs film adaptation in the future.

Sonic the Hedgehog has already caught a lot of flak from fans, as the movie’s first promotional posters prominently feature Sonic’s CGI legs. The art style took many fans by surprise, as those first looks, some of which were leaked showed a Sonic with legs that looked oddly human. With this trailer, it is clear that Paramount is releasing a tense action movie with a “realistic” Sonic and comedic elements, rather than a cartoony, comedy-first rout.

With Pokemon Detective Pikachu releasing in May, The Angry Birds Movie 2 in August and Sonic the Hedgehog in November, video game fans have plenty to watch in theaters this year.
