Project Scarlett Aims For “The Highest Frame Rate Possible”

In an interview with GameSpot, Microsoft’s Phil Spencer discussed the incoming Project Scarlett. He spoke about what Microsoft is aiming for in terms of gameplay and graphics, and how the company is making sure it achieves specific design goals.

In particular, Spencer, who’s the head of gaming at the Redmond giant, claims he wants the machine to focus on frame rate. This focus means that Project Scarlett is required to run at the highest fps count possible in every game available for it.

“I think the area that we really want to focus on next-generation is frame rate and playability of the games,” he said. “Ensuring that the games load incredibly fast, ensuring that the game is running at the highest frame rate possible.”

Spencer added that, as Microsoft is “also the Windows company,” he notices how this process of crafting super-fast graphics works on PC. Spencer knows “people love 60 frames-per-second games,” so 4K at 60fps games is “a real design goal for us.”

“Does this game both look and feel like no other game that I’ve seen?” is the central question Project Scarlett will be called to answer. Sure enough, it has what it takes to make a step forward in comparison with Xbox One X. The most recent console settled most of the time for an upscaled 4K, going for native 4K and was likely shooting for 30fps.

The next-generation console from Microsoft is coming during holiday 2020. Theoretically, Project Scarlett can run games up to 120fps. But whether it’s possible to achieve that on a console and what type of compromises remains to be seen.
