PGA Tour 2K franchise ‘just getting started,’ says Take-Two CEO

HB Studios has found its stride with its rebranded golf simulator.

Although 2K Sports has been known to create unique one-off titles in the sports genre, it appears there is still much more to see from its new PGA Tour 2K IP. In a quarterly earnings call, Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick revealed that the publisher’s first PGA-licensed golf sim has amassed over 2 million copies sold, equivocally warranting incoming yearly entries.

“We’re just getting started,” Zelnick expressed. “This is something that we feel like it merits investment from our side. And that’s something that we can really turn into [a] very profitable and exciting franchise for us going forward for many years.” Although the inaugural title did reach over 2 million users, Zelnick did not touch upon how much the publisher made from the game’s hefty amount of available DLC and cosmetic packs.

Seeing as how EA Sports’s Tiger Woods PGA Tour series has been dormant since 2015, 2K’s young franchise holds the latest golf game on the market that features professional golfers and courses, and it doesn’t seem to have competition anytime soon. It is all thanks to an 2018 agreement between 2K Games and developer HB Studios, which ultimately allowed the publisher to purchase the PGA license, as long as the developer’s former The Golf Club franchise was rebranded and under their domain.

PGA Tour 2K21 is currently available on PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Switch, with it also being backwards compatible on next-gen consoles.
