God of War PS4 Team Almost Cut Atreus In An Early Development Stage

Talking to GameSpot, creative director Cory Barlog provided an interesting behind the scenes story about the early development stage that led to the building of the PlayStation 4 exclusive God of War we know now.

According to Barlog, the dev team at Santa Monica Studio and Sony thought that the inclusion of Atreus could have been too ambitious for both the tools and knowledge put into place to make it work and the budget required.

So, the creative director offered an insane alternative, built upon the foundation of the movie All Is Lost with Robert Redford, to convince Sony to approve the original project with Kratos and a son he could interact with along the path.

“It would have been very different. The early phase when they told me, “Man, this might be too hard, too expensive, we’re already looking at so many challenges, it’s maybe too much.” When I went back and said, “Alright, fine, if it was not with Atreus, what would it be?”, he recalled.

“And, it would have been a very, very different game? The comparison I made was, “Alright, it’s gonna be All Is Lost with Robert Redford”; it’s gonna be one character who talks to himself occasionally, but generally, it will be very silent and everyone will talk in old Norse, so that you won’t understand anything anybody’s saying.”

God of War is releasing on April 20. Complete with Atreus, yes.
