God of War creative director Cory Barlog has commented some of the biggest changes in the game in comparison with the original series, particularly detailing his vision about the brand new combat system.

Talking to GameSpot, Barlog said that the game was seen as an opportunity for the team to go and show the world what they had learned by playing other video games and making other experiences during the last ten years.

God of War PS4 System Explained

‘Looking at the new God of War, we need a chance to show what we’ve learned over the last decade. So I didn’t want to change it for the sake of changing it, I wanted it to reflect how all of us [at the studio] have grown up. What we play is different. God of War is a reflection of what we play,’ he said.

With this in mind, the creative director praised what Capcom achieved on Resident Evil 7, a game that completely changed the perspective of the franchise while retaining its core vibe.

The latest entry in the survival horror franchise “shows that creators with a very strong vision and a really good team can make these bold decisions and have the audience follow them, even if they are resistant at the beginning,” he thinks.

God of War is releasing on April 20 for PS4.
