Each character in Trials of Mana starts with their own unique class, but you’ll need to gain more power than they begin with to make it through the game. By the end of Trials of Mana, you’ll get the chance to upgrade to higher classes twice with each of your characters. The first change is fairly simple, but the second can take some work. Here’s everything you’ll need to do to change classes in Trials of Mana.

Changing to Class 2

The requirements for changing to Class 2 are pretty straightforward, and you won’t need to go out of your way to hit them. All you need to do is reach level 18 with a character and you’re good to go. At that point, you need to track down a mana stone in the world, and you can make the switch. By the time you hit level 18 in Trials of Mana, you should be at or near a mana stone already. If you haven’t found one yet (which may be the case if you’ve been grinding random enemies to gain levels or items), start following the main story, and you’ll find it soon.

Deciding which class to change to at this point is a big decision. You can choose between a Light and Dark class now, and that will determine which classes you get to choose between when you get to Class 3.

In general, choosing a Light class now will give you access to healing and support options at the Class 3 change, while choosing a Dark class will open up options for more powerful attacks in Class 3. It’s a good idea to balance your party between Light and Dark, but be sure to choose classes you want to play, because you’ll stay with Class 2 for a long time. Whichever path you take, you’ll get a considerable stat boost for switching to Class 2, so it’s a good idea to make the change as soon as possible.

Changing to Class 3

Changing to Class 3 takes a lot more work than reaching Class 2. First, you’ll need to get to level 38, which should take longer than it did to reach level 18 unless you’re using lots of experience point boosts. Even after you hit level 38, you’ll need to find a class item for each class, which comes from chests and random drops in late-game dungeons and can take a while to find if you don’t get lucky.

Once you have the right class item and you’re at least level 38, you’ll need to head to the Sanctuary of Mana. The mana stones won’t be accessible at this point in the game, so this is the only place you can switch to Class 3. Go to the mana statue at the center of the area, and you’ll be able to use a class item to switch one of your characters to the corresponding class.

Just like the switch to Class 2, this comes with a large stat boost and a whole new suite of abilities. Keep in mind that whatever class you choose is the one you’ll be taking into Trials of Mana’s final battle, so be sure to choose a party composition that can stand up to the game’s toughest challenges.
