Twitch’s latest hit is an AI-generated Seinfeld episode that never ends

Imagine a show about nothing, well okay, not nothing, but where nothing really is going on. That’s Nothing, Forever. It’s basically a sitcom broadcast on Twitch but without any actual actors, writers, studio audience, or plot. It’s more or less a current version of Seinfeld but all created by AI and you can watch it 24 hours a day.

The plot is — well, there doesn’t seem to be a coherent storyline, as the entire show is run by artificial intelligence and machine learning technology. That’s right, all the lines the characters speak to each other are written by OpenAI’s GPT-3. Well, that’s all true aside from any artwork and the laugh track. But hear us out, it’s quite entertaining.

It focuses on four characters named Larry, Fred, Yvonne, and Kakler spending their time in various locations such as Larry’s apartment or the comedy club. They’ll walk around a pixelated room full of pixel fruit, paintings, furniture, and more talking about whatever they please. Literally, whatever. One minute it’s a discussion on tofu pet food and the next it’s a new sandwich shop opening. To top it all off, characters will comically speak directly to walls, walk into a random corner, or creepily stare into the “camera” when doing so. There is no storyline but it’s entertaining nonetheless. Watch even for a few minutes and you’ll get the idea. It’s like observing a live play where the actors hit all the wrong marks or even walk off stage but continue speaking without missing a beat. Yet, it all works in a weird way.

To add to the chaos, a laugh track will be thrown in every now and again, even when it has no point showing up. Scenes bounce around from one to another with characters talking about various topics. None of it is connected but each scene contains some quirky humor, a laugh track, and everyday conversation that ends in a joke. Then before you know it, an audio zinger hits and you’re into the next scene. The stream is strangely captivating and haunting at the same time.
