After fans worried that Bioware’s upcoming Dragon Age will receive loot boxes and other microtransactions, Bioware general manager Casey Hudson turned to Twitter with more news on the game’s upcoming features.
There’s a new Dragon Age coming, and while info remains scarce on the game at the moment, Dragon Age 4 is definitely on its way. For now, Bioware is prioritizing Anthem, but the studio’s general manager explored some of the game’s upcoming features in a tweet earlier today.
Casey Hudson, general manager for Bioware and a former developer for the original Mass Effect trilogy, turned to Twitter with more information on the next Dragon Age after Kotaku’s Jason Schreier published an investigative report detailing the internal climate at Bioware over both Anthem and Dragon Age. According to Schreier, Bioware plans to “still have a heavy focus on characters and story” while also adding “more ‘live’ elements into the game.”
Speculation first began after Schreier wondered what the next Dragon Age’s “live elements” could look like. After he suggested that might include microtransactions, fans worried EA will bloat Dragon Age 4 with loot boxes, throwing the tactical RPG series into the same microtransaction quagmire that plagued Star Wars: Battlefront II late last year. So in response to Schreier’s report, Hudson explained Bioware’s current plans.
“I think you’ll be relieved to see what the team is working on,” Hudson wrote in a tweet. “Story & character focused. Too early to talk details, but when we talk about ‘live’ it just means designing a game for continued storytelling after the main story.”
In that case, it seems Hudson is referencing post-launch DLC for Dragon Age 4. That would make plenty of sense, as Dragon Age: Inquisition also embraced post-release DLC.
Hudson’s tweet seems to raise more questions than answers, however. And now that Anthem is taking Bioware’s full focus, it’s unlikely that Dragon Age fans will receive any confirmation about Dragon Age 4’s new features in the immediate future.
Still, a new Dragon Age is on its way, and that’s promising in its own right. As for when that will be revealed, well, it looks like gamers will just have to wait.
