Bloober Team, the polish game development studio most notably known for the likes of Blair Witch and Layers of Fear, is gearing up for its next big release, The Medium. In an interview with GameInformer, lead game designer Wojciech Piejko and producer Jacek ZiÄ™ba explained how next-gen consoles have been crucial for the game’s development.

According to them, the previous generations of consoles “weren’t simply that powerful” to render two game worlds at the same time. The Medium’s dual reality gameplay is what sets it apart from every other next-gen game out there. Players will transition from the spirit world to the real world, sometimes being in both at the same time.

Piejko explains how the next-generation of consoles opened up new opportunities that went beyond the traditional visual leaps we have known to expect. “It’s so much more than just better graphics,” he says, “how the entire system work is different… Everything is changing from era to era, but right now? The level of detail, the freedom of physics is much higher.”

Piejko further states that this generation of gaming is the most crucial, explaining how aspects such as raytracing will elevate the experience. Aside from the graphical enhancements, raytracing could be used to enhance the attenuation of music, while also improvising the depth of the game’s world.

While we do not know how all of this would work, The Medium is shaping up to be an ambitious next-gen horror title. It launches on January 28 for Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Game Pass.
