No one doubted that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate would skyrocket in popularity, but it has now broken a major record: Despite having not even celebrated its first birthday yet, the party-fighter game has taken the title of best-selling fighting game of all time.

According to the latest Nintendo earnings report, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate sold 15.71 million copies as of September, making it the most well-performing game in its genre, in terms of sales. The previous best-selling fighting game of all time was Street Fighter II, which originally released in 1991 and, throughout its many versions and various rereleases, has sold a total of approx. 15.5 million units. An impressive feat to be sure, but the 16-bit classic has now been K.O.’d by Nintendo’s modern day all-star fighting game.

These latest figures also mean that overall sales for the entire Super Smash Bros. series have reached 53.03 million units sold, making it the best-selling fighting game series of all time, beating out other popular competitors like Tekken and Mortal Kombat.

Nintendo’s earnings report also states that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has outsold The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which has sold 14.54 million units. However, it has not yet caught up to the Switch’s best-selling title, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which continues to boost forward at 19.01 million units sold.

The latest DLC fighter to be included in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Terry Bogard from the Fatal Fury fighting game series, is set to be released sometime this month.
