Phil Spencer Clarifies On Project Scarlett’s Two Consoles

Last year, Phil Spencer claimed on stage at E3 that Microsoft was working on multiple consoles, which – linked to all the rumors we’ve reported over the previous few months – led people to believe that the next-gen Project Scarlett would be coming in two different models.
During E3 2019, Spencer only revealed Project Scarlett, meaning that plans for a lower specced platform called Lockhart could have been scrapped, or were never intended to see the light of day.
In an interview with Business Insider, the head of Xbox returned to the topic, sharing why he said “consoles” using the plural at E3 2018 and then revealed only one next-generation machine would release next year.
“Last year we said consoles, and we’ve shipped a console, and we’ve now detailed another console. I think that’s plural,” Spencer said. “Technically, that is plural,” he added with a laugh. “Right now, we’re focused on Project Scarlett and what we put on stage.”
When he says “we’ve shipped a console,” he does mean Xbox One S All-Digital Edition, the latest Xbox One S model which dropped without a Blu-ray disc at a cheaper price tag. Technically, he’s right, and one his laugh hints at plans that could have changed along the way. It looks like Scarlett might remain as a single model when it releases in 2020.
