Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle was a surprise hit in the western market for 2017. It combined two unique flavors that ended up absolutely delicious together: the world of Nintendo and the zany Rabbids, Ubisoft’s mascots. It hasn’t yet made its way to Japan or Asia so far, but it looks like its release could be the precursor to the story expansion DLC fans have been eagerly anticipating for some time.

A Japanese Switch eShop listing via Switch Indies’ Twitter account appears to show a June release date for the Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle story expansion DLC. Specifically, it looks as though it might land on June 30, 2018. There’s nothing one hundred percent concrete here beyond what the eagle-eyed gamers at Switch Indies found via the eShop, but it makes sense that Ubisoft and Nintendo would be launching the game in Japan and beyond alongside the upcoming story expansion later this year.

There hasn’t been any kind of official word just yet on whether or not this date is a placeholder or simply an error, but we’ll likely be hearing more about what’s happening with the additional story content in the next month or so if it does indeed come to fruition.

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle is an intriguing fusion of the world of Mario and your favorite Nintendo characters with XCOM-like mechanics and turn-based strategy. It may seem like one of the strangest mash-ups in the history of gaming, but if you haven’t yet given it a try, know that if you do pick it up on Switch, there’s a good chance that you’re going to be hooked. There’s something oddly satisfying about taking out a bevy of opponents with a Rabbid dressed like your favorite character from the Mario universe.
