Control: Ultimate Edition to bring ‘way different’ version of engine to next-gen consoles

Improvements give this next-gen bundle added ray-tracing, but leave out a few requested features.

Along with the announcement of Control: Ultimate Edition being free for PS Plus subscribers next week, the developer’s communications director has claimed that it will apparently come with a vastly improved engine. As a result, next-gen users will spot two exclusive ways to play, leading to a much smoother experience than its original iteration.

“The version of our engine in the next-gen Control is way different to the version used in the previous-gen Control,” Remedy’s Thomas Puha told fans on Twitter. Although its impact hasn’t been witnessed in great detail, he says that it provides a “lot of changes in things like how we handle data.”

He also let out that the engine’s improvements allow the game to have a Performance Mode that will offer 60 frames-per-second on both PS5 and Xbox Series X, plus a Graphics Mode that features ray-tracing at 30 FPS. On top of that, PS5 owners will also have Activity Cards and haptic feedback included.

Unfortunately, Puha confirmed that PS4 and Xbox One game saves, as well as trophies and achievements earned from the original title, cannot be transferred over to the newer edition.

Players can jump into the shoes of FBC agent Jesse Faden once again when Control: Ultimate Edition for Xbox Series X/S and PS5 releases on February 2.
