Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Crossplay Explained

The second weekend of the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare beta isn’t too far off, and it’ll be testing out a crucial feature when it comes around – crossplay! For the first time in the series’ history, fans will be able to play with each other across Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC. That’s right, regardless of platform, they can take on each other how they see fit.

During a livestream earlier today, Infinity Ward explained how this system will work, so fans can see how it works firsthand.

First off, crossplay isn’t required. Players can stick with a specific network if they don’t feel like challenging those on other platforms.

From there, there’s a requirement with creating a COD Account. This is quick and easy, not to mention free. Those interested can do so on the official Call of Duty page.

Then comes the balancing, with options available once you opt-in. There are control options on each platform, as follows:

• Xbox One and PlayStation 4: Controller, or keyboard and mouse
• PC: Controller, or keyboard and mouse

Now, here’s where things get tricky. Taking this direction, players with a keyboard and mouse can only join up with players that have a similar control format. The same goes for those that have controllers, as they can’t be matched up with those with the previous format.

There are also lobby options where players can skip the control scheme filters, and take on all types, regardless of control set-up. With this, Modern Warfare lobby times should be significantly less.

You can also put together lists with Friends and Parties, based on all of the different platforms. By doing this, you can do away with searches and make sure they’re ready to go, based on their platform. Organization and setting up matches should be easy with this process.

The crossplay option does support all multiplayer modes. However, it doesn’t appear to be available with Ranked Play or competitive tournaments. This could change in the future, so stay tuned.

Finally, all platforms will be getting the same content at the same time. Sony no longer has an early advantage, as it did in the past with the previous Call of Duty games.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s beta kicks off later this week and runs all weekend, from the 19th through the 23rd. Keep in mind that the 19th and 20th sessions are for Early Access only, and the other days are open to everyone.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare releases on October 25 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.
