According to a report from Kotaku’s Jason Scheier, BioWare “tried (…) more than once” to work on Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 3.

Based on the intel gathered by the reporter, it looks like Electronic Arts had different ideas about what the developer should work on in the future.

BioWare developed the original Knights of the Old Republic under LucasArts; then a sequel was built by Microsoft-owned Obsidian Entertainment.

Now that EA owns the Star Wars license, it looked like the perfect chance for the original dev team to return to the IP.

Instead, we learn that “they’ve tried to make it happen, more than once from what I’ve heard,” but had “no luck” in their effort.

From the sound of it, it seems like EA prefers to have BioWare on fixed IPs such as Dragon Age, which is returning for a fourth chapter after Anthem, and Mass Effect.

On top of launching a brand new property with online core gameplay like, again, Anthem, that’s set to release in a couple of months.

It must also be noted that BioWare Austin is already working on a Star Wars project, the MMO The Old Republic.

The reports come in the middle of a miserable few months for the Star Wars license, after Electronic Arts shut Visceral Games and its Uncharted like project down and EA Vancouver’s open world game had the same fate.
