Anthem won’t have PvP, console version locked to 30 FPS, and no loot boxes | E3 2018

New details have emerged about Anthem after its initial reveal at EA’s E3 press conference earlier today.

GameInformer had the chance to sit down with Anthem’s executive producer Mark Darrah to ask rapid fire questions about the game and learn more about it before its official release.

Darrah revealed that the game won’t have a PvP mode at launch—the game will solely focus on a co-op environment. Anthem will also have no AI party members, which means you either go in alone with no help or with friends and other players.

Even with the emphasis on co-op, there will be no co-op story decisions and no loot sharing, swapping, or stealing functions in-game. Bioware is also keen to try and control the amount of griefing possible in the game when it launches early next year.

The game will launch on Feb. 22, 2019 on all systems, with PC releasing on the same day as consoles. The game will be locked at 30 FPS on all consoles, while the PC frame-rate will be unlocked, giving PC players an edge over their console counterparts.

Darrah also confirmed that there will be no loot boxes added into Anthem—instead, the game will focus on cosmetic-only microtransactions. The news is sure to be well received by fans who rebelled against the practices seen in Star Wars Battlefront 2, where players needed to unlock items in loot boxes to get a slight advantage by unlocking better cards.

In addition, Darrah said that there are no plans for a Nintendo Switch version at this time (sorry, Nintendo fans) and there will be no way to play the game offline. Some other details included the ability to swap classes without needing to start a new character and leveled areas around the world.
