Sony has just revealed the latest sales data for PlayStation 4, which confirms the console is the second best-selling home platform ever in the world of gaming. This is only the most recent confirmation of how successful the platform has been throughout the generation.

The latest data claim that PS4 has reached 102.8 million consoles shipped around the world, which are a further step forward at the three months ended September 30, 2019. Mind it’s “shipped” and not “sold,” and this means that the consoles in question have been delivered to retailers.

As we said, this data confirms that PlayStation 4 is the second best-selling home console ever, only behind PlayStation 2, which doesn’t seem likely to be reached or even topped by the end of its lifecycle: PS2 is at 155 million units, as shared by Gematsu.

It’s an unbelievable milestone for PS4 as it has managed to ship more consoles than the original PlayStation (102.49 million units) and the Wii (101.63 million units) which appeared to be unreachable if you consider that today there are many more devices where you can play like smartphones and tablets in comparison with those days.

The latest quarter saw PS4 ship 2.8 million consoles, by the way, which is down 1.1 million from the 3.9 million shipped during the same period of the previous FY; it’s easy to understand why, as we get closer and closer to the end of the gen.

The forecast for the next quarter (April 1, 2019, to March 31, 2020) has been lowered from the original 15 million units to 13.5 million units in consideration of what’s happened during the latest quarter.
