In a few hours, we’ll learn everything we need to know about Death Stranding, and that will likely include a November 8, 2019 release date. This could come as a surprise as recent rumors claimed that the window would be used for The Last of Us Part II, instead.

Surprisingly, as reported by Kotaku’s Jason Schreier, those rumors were at least partially true, as Schreier claims that The Last of Us Part II was indeed planned for a fall 2019 release date and was then delayed to early 2020, possibly February.

I’ve always said that Death Stranding would be released before any other of the big exclusives coming to PS4, such as The Last of Us Part II and Ghost of Tsushima, but this new Intel lets us know that Naughty Dog has done some massive progress on the game over the last few months, and that was quite unexpected to me.

Sony would not be releasing two big games in the same window, and so it was rather obvious that one of them should have been delayed. The delayed game happened to be The Last of Us Part II, and Schreier thinks the month of launch could possibly be February 2020.

I still think it’s a bit too early for the game to properly ship, but that’s depending on the will of Sony to release the game before the fiscal year ends (which happens on March 31, 2020). As in the tradition of Naughty Dog, there could be some delay, but if Sony wants the game to drop before the FY ends, that will not go further than March.

Stay tuned for more information, as TLOU2 was also rumored to be part of a State of Play broadcast tomorrow, May 30. We don’t know if that’s still happening since all the focus is now on Death Stranding and an announcement has not come yet about that topic.
