Wolfenstein: Youngblood introduces co-op play to the series. You and a friend can team up as the Blazkowicz sisters, Jess and Soph, to take on the Nazi hordes present in 1980’s Europe. Like most shooters, the game has a range of difficulty levels, but how it works in co-operative play is a little strange.

How Difficulty Works During Co-op

Wolfenstein: Youngblood has a range of difficulty settings that you can choose from as you play. You can also change it at any time by entering the options menu. When you play coop, either with a friend or through a random public lobby, the game does not have a default difficulty. Instead, you can set your difficulty while playing co-op, and this does not impact your co-op partner.

You each experience the game at your chosen difficulty. Two friends of differing skill levels can play together, and one of them can have the difficulty set higher than the other. How much damage you give and receive is affected by your difficulty settings, not your coop partner’s difficulty.

It is an interesting system to use. Although, I am sure if you are playing randomly through matchmaking that the game tries to match you up with someone playing on a similar difficulty level.

Overall, how the difficulty works in co-op play is a great idea. Wolfenstein: Youngblood works off the view of a shared pool of lives between the two sisters. If you are draining away more lives than your coop partner, you can lower your difficulty, so they don’t carry you. This solution should lead to less frustration between players and a happier time for everyone playing.
