Belle is quite a mysterious character in Sea of Thieves. Despite being one of the faces of the franchise and appearing in a variety of Adventures since the game started adding them, we still want to know more about this ghostly, white-eyed figure. Here’s her story so far.

What is Belle’s background in Sea of Thieves?

Sea of Thieves Adventures actually began with Belle. Shrouded Islands was the first outing, sending players to investigate a strange fog that rolled in. By using Belle’s compass, they could find her and initiate the quest, while also learning a bit about her past. Belle travels between both the titular Sea of Thieves and the Sea of the Damned. She also gave warning about the powerful Soulflame Captain, implying that she is on the human pirates’ side, despite hailing from the ghostly Sea of the Damned.

Belle later appeared during Forts of the Forgotten, where the goal was to free prisoners from the mysterious Sea Forts found across the ocean. Belle saw the forts’ appearances as a warning, claiming that the evil Captain Flameheart was building toward something bigger: seizing the Veil of the Ancients. That escalation came with The Shrouded Deep, which saw players confront a megalodon known as the Shrouded Ghost on their way to retrieve the Veil first.

As it turns out, the Veil itself isn’t all-powerful: there are Veil Stones that can be inserted into it to power the mask up. These were collected during the Legend of the Veil Voyage, and wouldn’t you know it, Belle was a part of that quest too. With a fully-powered Veil of the Ancients, players could open a portal and rescue Merrick’s ghost from the Sea of the Damned during A Hunter’s Cry — Belle was investigating his murder in the previous Adventure, The Forsaken Hunter.

Most recently, Belle has been shown in the teaser trailer for the latest Adventure, The Sirens’ Prize. “The time of resurrection shall be foretold by one reborn as the herald of the flame,” she reads from an old journal. She’s warned players about Captain Flameheart before, and that prophecy gives her another reason to send them on a new quest. In short, Belle’s past is murky, but her present is clear: she serves as a messenger to warn players about impending doom from other oceans.
