Upcoming action roguelike Have a Nice Death, from developer Magic Design Studios, looks set to bring some fast-paced thrills —with a touch of Hollow Knight’s cute emo aesthetic — to a wider audience in the near future. After its reveal at The Game Awards 2021, the game has had a fairly long Early Access period that gave players a taste of what the game has to offer. But after nearly a year in a state of open development, we’re fast approaching the arrival of Have a Nice Death in full.

Have a Nice Death release date
Have a Nice Death is in Early Access on Steam, where it has been since March of 2022. Its 1.0 release date, however, is March 22 of this year, when it will also be arriving on Nintendo Switch. This means that anyone looking to get stuck into the game’s macabre hack-and-slash action doesn’t have long to wait. With a striking hand-drawn art style, over 30 weapons and spells at your disposal, and a risk-and-reward Curse system, players have plenty of variety to look forward to once the game does arrive. A recent trailer also outlined the different elements of the game’s cyclical roguelike structure, which features quite a few permanent upgrades and NPC storylines à la Supergiants’s hit roguelike Hades.
In Have a Nice Death, you play as a peculiarly bureaucratic iteration of Death, struggling under a mountain of paperwork while his subordinates, The Sorrows, wreak havoc on the rest of the world. Under the ever-present (and maybe a little too real) specter of burnout, you’ll need to travel to the various departments that make up the afterlife in order to put The Sorrows in their place and, hopefully, earn yourself a bit of a vacation — which you’ll inevitably trade in just to get one more weapon upgrade.
