Nvidia has revealed the next generation of GPUs that they have been developing, and these are shaping up to be dramatic game-changers. The new 3000 series, called Ampere, will be using Streaming Multiprocessors to provide significant performance gains over previous Nvidia cards. The cards also utilize Samsung’s 8nm processing to cram as much goodness as possible onto the boards.

The cards promise to deliver much better performance for Raytracing, as well as all other functions required to get your games running as fast as possible at high resolutions. While it will take some time to cut through the marketing speak, we can confirm the release dates for two of the three new cards.

  • Geforce RTX 3080 – September 17
  • Geforce RTX 3090 – September 24
  • Geforce RTX 3070 – October, exact date tba.

The RTX 3070 has no confirmed date yet, so we will need to wait for further information from Nvidia about that.

While it is standard practice for us to preach caution when it comes to new computer hardware and the promises made by those who make them, this really does seem to be a generational leap in the kind of technology and power that PC gamers can get their hands on. While not hugely in-depth, the benchmarking show in the above video by Digital Foundry marks a vast improvement over currently available GPUs.

We will be eagerly awaiting the chance to get our hands on these news cards, and put them through their paces on all our favorite games. Perhaps we won’t have to wait too long to get something that can handle the complex and challenging physics simulations in Microsoft Flight Simulator after all.
