With the PC launch of Red Dead Redemption 2 just over a few days away, it’s time to start dusting off the old guides and updating them for all of you newbies out there, so you can get the most out of your Red Dead Online experience. Now be warned, it isn’t called The Wild West for nothing, and while you’re out on the lonesome trail, you’re likely to run into a few hombre’s who aren’t exactly what you’d call friendly. It’s at times like these you could do with having some people to back you up.

Posse’s are useful on a few levels. There’s the aforementioned extra fire-power they afford if you’ve decided not to bother playing defensive. Still, they also come in handy when you’re doing Stranger missions, main missions, or off maxing out your chosen Frontier Pursuit. Trust me on this; there are times during my Bounty Hunter run that I’ve wished I’d had some back up while chasing down a group of outlaws so I could’ve brought them all in alive and not just one person kicking and three corpses in my wagon.

So how do you go about creating your gang or joining someone else’s? Let this old cowpoke show you the way.

How To Play With Friends Or Form A Posse In Red Dead Online

Joining Someone Else’s Posse

When the game’s tutorial is over, you’ll find yourself cast out into the wilderness with hardly any money or gold and a pea shooter for protection. Now, you can choose to go it alone, which is nowhere near as dangerous to do that as it was in the early days of Red Dead Online, or you can choose to join someone else’s posse. It would be a bit adventurous of you to attempt to start your own crew just yet, even if you have a ton of friends who’ve jumped into the game at the same time, as it costs $200 to make one that lasts beyond this gaming session, so your best bet here is to team up with another crew, at least for a while.

To do this, open the Free Roam menu and navigate to the Posse tab. Click on it and it will show you all the nearby gangs and whether or not they’re accepting members, as some posses can only be joined by invitation, and if you find one you like the look of and there are no hoops to jump threw for joining up then just click on them, and away you go.

There are a couple of things to bear in mind here. First off, you need to check their morality. If you’re going the way of the good guy then there’s no point in joining a gang of cutthroats and murderous fiends and alternatively, if you’re going to play the role of bad guy then why waste your time hanging out with a bunch of darn do-gooder’s? Secondly, if you don’t want to have to do this every time you log into Red Dead Online, then check to see if the posse you’re about to apply for is permanent or temporary. If it’s the former, then they’ll be there each time you boot the game up, but if it’s the latter, then you’re going to have to find yourself a new crew in the morning.

The easiest way to find yourself a new posse each day, if that’s the way you want to go about it, is to click on the Posse Up option when you hit the menu screen. This will automatically find a posse for you that has the same moral leanings as you do.

Forming A Posse Of Your Own

If you want to ride the range with your friends then forming your own posse is the way to go. This is done quite only by bringing up the Free Roam menu and clicking on the Posse tab again. When in here go to Form A Posse and, well, form a posse.

You should have two choices here as to whether you want to form a temporary one or a permanent one, and the choice is up to you, but there are some benefits from setting up a continuous gang of outlaws. For a start, you can name your posse, and you can have a big camp which will allow you up to eight other players. In contrast, the other one only allows you four, but the main one is that any persistent posse is given access to the Posse Versus Mode, which a temporary one won’t grant you, but it also comes at a price, as I mentioned earlier, of $200.

Once you’ve decided how you want to tame the Wild West, fiddle around with the settings and decide if you want things like “friendly fire” switched on or not. If you want your posse to be private or public, which is very important if you only want to play with people you know, you’re ready to add your friends.

To do this, make sure you still have the Free Roam menu up, and back in that good ol’ posse tab, you’ll see “Invite To Posse.” Go here, and you’ll see a list of all players that are nearby, but if you go right, then your friend’s list should pop up. Anyone who’s playing Red Dead Online will have a black and white picture of their avatar next to their name, so click on them and send that invite, and soon you’ll be bringing in bad guys or breaking the law like a latter-day Hole In The Wall Gang.
