Rarest mounts in World of Warcraft
Find out which mounts are the hardest to get in World of Warcraft.
There are hundreds of mounts available in World of Warcraft. Many of them are relatively easy to get with some effort, while others require you to be quite dedicated to specific types of play. Then, there are mounts that are so rare that less than 1% of the millions of players who play WoW have them in their inventory. These mounts are this rare for several different reasons, but they all have one thing in common: most players don’t have them. Let’s take a look at 10 of the rarest mounts in WoW from most rare to least.
What are the rarest mounts in WoW?
Honorable Mention: Fluorescent Green Mechanostrider
This is a bit of an odd one, so we won’t include it on the proper list. Early in WoW’s life cycle, a European player named Narshe on the Frostmane server was having problems with his Mechanostrider. A friendly GM stepped in to gift him a new one and accidentally gave Narshe this unreleased version of the mount. That made Narshe the only player in the world with this particular coloring. Since then, Narshe tried to sell his account and the mount has apparently been deleted from his profile.

1. Black Qiraji War Tank
First up is a mount that is no longer obtainable in-game. The Black Qiraji War Tank was part of the original Ahn-Qiraj event. You had to ring the Scarab gong within 10 hours of the first person to ring it. You can still get the other colors of this mount in various ways, but this particular version remains one of the rarest mounts in the game because you had to be playing back in the early days of Vanilla Warcraft.
2. Prestigious Bloodforged Courser
Of all the PVP mounts, this might be the toughest to get. You need to farm your way to Honor Level 500, which is going to take you a ridiculous amount of hours in just PVP to amass. However, there are all kinds of PVP mounts that most players won’t own because of how dedicated you have to be to the various game modes. While the Courser might be the toughest, it’s not like some of the Arena or Rated Battlegrounds mounts are any easier to get.
3. Black Proto-Drake
The Black Proto-Drake mount is an example of a mount that wasn’t too hard to get but was retired in the same patch that it was introduced. This mount was originally obtained via completing the meta achievement for the launch raids of Wrath of the Lich King on 25-man difficulty. Organizing this many people and doing a run of Naxxramas back in the day where no one in the roster died during the raid was extremely hard.
4. Plagued Proto-Drake
The Plagued Proto-Drake is rare for the same reasons as the Black Proto-Drake. The only thing that keeps this one from being just as rare is the fact that it can still be obtained on the Black Market Auction House should it show up, though it usually goes for a pretty penny. This mount was originally obtained via completing the meta achievement for the launch raids of Wrath of the Lich King on 10-man difficulty.
5. Silent Glider
To get this mount, you need to farm a rare spawn in the Coral Forest called Soundless. The drop rate for this is under 1% and you can only loot the enemy once per day. Soundless also has multiple spawn points and a respawn timer of over six hours. This is essentially the modern-day version of mounts like Aeonaxx or the Time-Lost Proto-Drake, making it a highly sought-after mount.
6. X-45 Heartbreaker
The X-45 Heartbreaker mount, also known as the Big Love Rocket, has slowly started to become more common now that the drop rate was slightly increased. However, this mount enjoyed a .001% chance to drop from a boss only available for two weeks out of the year for over a decade. Putting a mount this rare into such a small window every year made it extremely frustrating to farm.
7. Swift Zulian Tiger
The Swift Zulian Tiger is not very rare if you log on to WoW Classic, but it is another story in retail. The mount was a rare drop from the High Priest Thekal encounter in the original Zul’Gurub raid but was retired when the raid got revamped as a dungeon in Cataclysm. The only way to obtain it now is via the Black Market Auction House, and it will always go for the gold cap when it infrequently appears.

8. Swift Razzashi Raptor
The Swift Razzashi Raptor is similar to the Swift Zulian Tiger in rarity. The mount was a rare drop from the Bloodlord Mandokir encounter in the original Zul’Gurub raid but hasn’t been available since the raid got revamped as a dungeon in Cataclysm. You can still find it sometimes on the Black Market Auction House, but will have to drop a ton of gold to get it should it appear.
9. Amani War Bear
The Amani War Bear is one of the most memorable mounts to acquire when it was available in The Burning Crusade. It involved completing a timed run of the Zul’Aman raid, and only one person in a roster of ten could get it per clear. While a lot of people did manage to snag it during the expansion, it has been well over a decade since it retired, and you don’t see it often anymore.
10. Swift Zhevra
The Swift Zhevra mount was the original Recruit A Friend reward. Recruit A Friend still exists in WoW, but they have revamped it many times over the years, and it has been a very long time since the Zhevra was available as a reward option. While pretty common back in its prime, this mount is almost never seen anymore.
