During the recent Nintendo Direct earlier this month, viewers were treated to the premiere trailer showcasing the latest title from the Octopath Traveler development team, Project Triangle Strategy. And while the game has been called a “successor” of sorts, could Triangle Strategy be a true sequel to Octopath Traveler?
According to the trailer, the title is “the latest in the HD-2D series,” which is a reference to the graphical style of both games using 2D sprite art rendered on a 3D plane.
This creates a unique-looking and rather stunning effect that invokes the gorgeous sprite art graphics of classic SNES titles while offering more dynamic visuals and camera angles.
However, in terms of gameplay, there’s a sharp divide as Triangle Strategy features a tactical battle system similar to Final Fantasy Tactics, rather than the more traditional turn-based battle system of Octopath Traveler.
Neither Nintendo nor Square Enix has confirmed whether the two games are in the same universe, though they do both take place in a very similar European fantasy setting. And while they both feature magic systems, the mechanics of each are quite different. So it seems that as of now, it’s unclear whether the titles share the same world.
