Mass Effect Legendary Edition is officially a real thing that we can all look forward to now that EA has formally announced it. The game will be launching for PC, Xbox, and PlayStation on May 14. If you are wondering if the game will be available to play on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles, the answer is yet.

Mass Effect Legendary Edition will have forward compatibility with both Sony and Microsoft’s latest consoles, but it will not launch with an optimized version for the new hardware. According to the press release, both consoles will run the game at up to 4K resolutions.

For anyone disappointed in the lack of an optimized version for the new hardware, it is important to consider the sheer size and scale of this remastering project. Rather than just a single title, the Legendary Edition contains Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3, so the work involved in optimizing all three titles across three additional consoles would be considerable.

Truthfully, the forward compatibility of both the PS5 and the Series X/S is very much fit for purpose. While it does mean that loading times may be a little longer due to how information is stored on HDD compared to SSD, the Legendary Edition should run smoothly and look beautiful on the consoles.

Helping to make the games look better than ever will be all the work the team has put into remastering the character models, textures, shaders, and visual effects. The games will take advantage of improved lighting and dynamic shadows, volumetric, and depth of field to give players the most beautiful incarnation of the Mass Effect series to date.
