The wildly popular Hogwarts Legacy holds a handful of ways to traverse its sprawling open world, but there may not be one grander than flying around on a broom. Broomsticks can be used endlessly, allowing you to reach great heights and travel at accelerated speeds.

Better yet, the broom comes in various styles for players to choose from. That said, those wanting to equip a broom will need to take a few required steps before being able to do so. Here is how you can access and change your broom in Hogwarts Legacy.

Before hopping onto your broom, you will first need to make sure you have finished your first Flying Class at Hogwarts. You can simply work your way through the main story to earn this quest and completing it allows you to purchase a broom in Hogsmeade.

Once you’ve got a broom, it can then be equipped through the item wheel or in the gear menu. Those on PS5 or Xbox can open the wheel by pressing their respective front left bumper, while PC users can do this with the Tab key.

On Nintendo Switch, you’ll need to open the menu using the + button, then head to the Gear page in order to equip your broom. Once equipped, you can hop on by holding L, then pressing A.

As shown above, the wheel presents all of your unlocked rides on the right side of the screen, and pressing the button next to each instantly equips it. However, there are some restrictions on when and where you can hop on your broom.

You will not be able to use your broom while inside buildings or towns. An icon near the HUD’s mini-map will also appear when you are unable to fly in certain areas.

Now that you have your broom on hand, it may also be worth considering upgrading the magical item. Upgrading items makes them more powerful without the need to swap out an entirely different item altogether.

After you have completed the Flying Test quest for Albie Weeks, his Spintwitches Sporting Needs shop will offer the first possible upgrade you can unlock, boosting its speed and acceleration. You’ll need to bring 1,000 gold to purchase this upgrade.

Once you unlock this initial upgrade, you can gain more upgrades by taking the Flying Test and beating Iselda’s record again. To start these additional quests, just talk to Mr. Weeks again.

Once you’ve unlocked your first broom, you may be eager to swap it out for a different model. There are several brooms you can buy at Spintwitches Sporting Needs and unlock through other quests and interactions.

To switch to a different broom, simply open up the equipment menu and choose the broom you want to equip from your Gear. Once you’ve set your primary broom, you’ll be able to hop on it and zoom to your next destination.

Keep in mind that if you like the looks of one broom, but prefer the stats of another, you can use the handy-dandy Change Appearance option in your gear menu by hovering over your broomstick in the main gear page. This lets you magically make your equipment take on the appearance of something else in your inventory while retaining the stats of the equipped item.

Brooms are an excellent way to travel in Hogwarts Legacy and are a perfect fit for Harry Potter fans who’ve always wanted to play Quidditch. Though, if you need to get to your next quest in a flash, Floo Flames’ fast traveling ability should be able to do the trick.
