Thanks to a recent AMA with Larian that was held on Reddit, we now have some details about how long and short rests will work in Baldur’s Gate 3. If you haven’t been paying attention, Baldur’s Gate 3 is looking to very closely replicate the rules that you will know and love from Dungeons and Dragons Fifth Edition, but some changes will need to be made to convert it into a videogame.

Resting is how a party will regain health, spells slots, and the usage of abilities in between combat. Traditionally, Dungeons and Dragons has long and short rests that will each allow the party to regain different amounts of each missing health and spells. A short rest will last for about an hour, allowing the characters to spend hit dice to regain health. A long rest lasts for about eight hours and allows players to regain lost hit points and hit dice, along with regaining used slots for spells and abilities.

The way things will work in Baldur’s Gate is that to take a long rest, parties will need to camp for the night, and everything that will normally be returned during a 5E long rest will be returned. Characters will heal up, their spells will recharge, and they will be ready for another day of battle and exploration.

The time in between combat will be treated as short rests, they won’t be things that you specifically need to find the time for. This will be very interesting for the Warlock class, who traditionally gets all their spell slots back from a short rest, and Larian confirmed that they will get all their slots back between combat encounters in Baldur’s Gate 3.

So, while we need to get our hands on the game to figure out exactly how it will all play out, that is everything we know about long and short rests in Baldur’s Gate 3.
