How do components work in Star Wars: Squadrons?

What makes your X-wing so special?
This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

The internal parts of your starfighter make your ship unique compared to others in Star Wars: Squadrons. There are two factions to pick from, the Galactic Empire and the New Republic. Both sides have four starfighters model to choose from, making it feel like there’s a minimal pool of options available to players. However, a team with two X-wing pilots, or two Y-wings pilots, will have drastically different components, giving those pilots unique abilities.

How do you acquire more components?

You receive more through Requisition points. You earn these points by playing the game and completing challenges. The more you play, the more Requisition points you earn, giving you access to a wider variety of options.

How many types components do you use?

There are seven slots available on your starship. However, there are a few ships that don’t have a shield generator slot available, such as the TIE-fighter, and will only have seven.

  • Primary Weapons
  • Auxiliary (x2)
  • Countermeasures
  • Hull
  • Shields
  • Engines

These components break down into three of them being used as passive components, and four of them are active. You can choose the positives and negatives of each one as your craft your ideal starfighter.

Passive components

The passive components are always readily available and ready on your starfighter. These consist of your fighter’s engines, hull, and shields. The changes in these components vary in how they modify your ship’s stats. For example, you can use a component for your engine that creates a massive explosion following your death, potentially damaging other fighters near you. Alternatively, you can use a shield model that is extremely good at deflecting blaster fire but takes more damage when hit by a missile.

Active components

The active components in your starfighter are the ones you have to activate during a dogfight manually. These make up your fighter’s primary weapons, auxiliary components, and countermeasures. Much like the passive components, your active choices make your starfighter a standout craft. Your primary weapon on your X-wing could have a higher rate of fire than the standard model. Still, it may not do as much damage, encouraging you to remain closer to your opponents to land as many shots as possible.

Your starfighter’s auxiliary components are where you can have real fun with the creative abilities available to you. In this slot, you can have an astromech partner who is capable of making quick repairs to keep your starfighter flying, or different ordinance types, such as torpedoes, bombs, and some fighters can even make use of mines. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to use two of a similar model, so no double-down on two astromechs to keep your wings up. The same goes for the countermeasures, which is how you exit an encounter and attempt to regroup with your comrades.

The standard X-wing and TIE-fighter model available to players will be a balanced starfighter, ideal for any encounter. But when you spend a few minutes tinkering on your favorite ship, that’s where the depth comes in. You can choose the type of maneuvers and tactics you want to employ with your starfighter for your crew. Players can choose to spend hours under the hood of their fighter’s engine, or jump straight into the cockpit and fly through the stars.
