Cyberpunk 2077’s highly anticipated 2.0 update promises a game-changing experience. However, this fresh coat of paint revamps a game with its fair share of players dating back to 2020. Does updating Cyberpunk 2077 to its 2.0 version mean you must part ways with your old save files? Let’s find out whether you can continue your savings or need to start fresh.

The good news is that your old saves are indeed compatible with the 2.0 update and Phantom Liberty expansion. However, there’s a significant catch – you must respec your character from scratch. The old skill tree focused on passive skills, whereas the new one brought more active skills. This means your premade build will be rendered obsolete due to sweeping changes in armor and cyberware.

However, while you can technically continue with old saves, CD Projekt Red recommends starting a new game after updating to Cyberpunk 2077 2.0. They believe players should embrace the new and improved Cyberpunk 2077 experience by starting anew and experiencing the massive changes from the story’s beginning. There’s a remade perk system, vehicle combat, updated enemy AI, and a new net running system.

CD Projekt Red does offer a warning for the modding community. If you use mods, uninstall them until the modding community updates them for 2.0. Outdated mods may disrupt your experience and even cause critical errors.

You’ll have time to adjust to these changes before the Phantom Liberty expansion drops. It becomes accessible after completing the Voodoo Boys questline, so you’ll need to advance through a significant portion of the story regardless. The new content and experiences awaiting you make starting fresh worthwhile.

The free Update 2.0 is available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The changes apply to the base game and are available to all players. Owners of the Phantom Liberty expansion can jump into the expansion story with a leveled-up character starting on September 26th.
