The robots are taking over.

A new multiplayer mode has been added to SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated, where you and a friend can jump into a horde mode to see who survives the longest and receives the most points. You won’t have to play too many options to set up a multiplayer game because it’s a straightforward game mode available for only you and another player. You can have your partner join you online or right next to you in a local session.

You and your friend will have seven characters to choose from SpongeBob, Patrick, Sandy, Gary, Squidward, Mr. Krabs, and Robo Plankton. After choosing your characters, you will load into the game and see a giant robot version of Squidward spawning in robots for you to fight. Both of you will have to take out the robots of the wave, and the more robots you take out, the more points you receive. Players earn points individually, so the two of you are working together to survive, but you’re also competing to get the most points. There are 26 islands you and your partner can fight through if you survive the waves of robots.

To invite a friend to join your game, you can hook up a second controller to your console, or ask them to join your session online. For those who purchased the steam version of Rehydrated, the game does feature Play Together, which means only one person needs to own the game to play multiplayer. To use the Play Together function, have the owner of Rehydrated open up their friend’s list while playing to send the invite, and the two of you can play together.

Multiplayer is not available for the story mode, though. You won’t be able to play through the traditional campaign with a friend, but you can at least fight wave after wave of robots to see who can reach the most points.
