The newly announced Half-Life: Alyx will feature recast voice performances for several of its most prominent characters, including Alyx herself. PC Gamer revealed the news on their website.

A trailer for Half-Life: Alyx was released on Nov. 21, sharing new details for the upcoming VR title. With the release of the new trailer, PC Gamer revealed that several key characters have been recast, and the most prominent being the titular Alyx herself.

In Half-Life: Alyx, Alyx will now be played by Ozioma Akagha – the actress who played Plastic in Mirror Edge: Catalyst, and Barbara Casey, Zena Woodard, and Angela Cummings in Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus.

Actress Merle Dandridge portrayed the Alyx character in the original Half-Life games.

Designer Greg Coomer explains the reason for the recast in the PC Gamer piece. This new Half-Life video game is a prequel to the first two games, meaning they needed to cast someone younger in the role because it has been twelve years since the last game in the series released.

Another major recasting is Eli Vance, Alyx’s father. The original actor for Vance, Robert Guillaume, unfortunately, passed away in 2017. Guillaume was a prolific TV and movie actor, possibly most well-known for his voice performance in the original Lion King. Vance will now be voiced by James Moses Black, an actor known for his portrayal in This is Us.

The confirmed returning actors are Mike Shapiro for G-Man, Ellen McLain for the Combine Overwatch broadcasts, and Tony Todd for the Vortigaunts.

Rhys Darby, a voice actor from New Zealand, will play a new character in Half-Life: Alyx. Darby is known for his performances in Flight of the Conchords and What We Do In The Shadows.

Half-Life: Alyx is the first game in the Half-Life series since Half-Life 2: Episode Two. It was released in 2007 and is known for its cliffhanger ending.

Half-Life: Alyx will release in March 2020.
