Root: The Tabletop Roleplaying Game, based on the popular board game Root: A Game of Woodland Might and Right is due out next September after its Kickstarter campaign hit its funding goal within hours. Less than one day after being launched, the Kickstarter not only smashed through its $10,000 goal but has already raised more than $120,000, enough money to meet all of the currently announced stretch goals.

In the original Root board game, players take control of factions of adorable woodland creatures as they wage horrific war on one another for control of the wilderness in which they all live. Less than a year after its release, Root has already stacked up a considerable number of awards and successfully funded two expansions on Kickstarter.

Root: The TTRPG will turn the board game’s setting into a full-fledged roleplaying system, giving players a look at the Woodland from the perspective of a single character, rather than commanding armies of anonymous critters. The game is based on the Powered by the Apocalypse ruleset, which is also the basis of popular games like Dungeon World and Monster of the Week. The game will include six playable classes, with six more in an expansion book. The expansion also has rules on using the board game and TRPG together in one campaign.

The Kickstarter, which runs through mid-October, has options ranging from $20 for PDFs of the rulebook and expansion up to $200 for deluxe and standard hardback copies of both plus a trove of bonuses like laminated maps and custom dice. There are also optional additions like a set of equipment cards available.

If you want to check out how the game plays before parting with your hard-earned cash, its Kickstarter page has a video of an actual game session, and a free copy of the in-development quickstart ruleset is available on DriveThruRPG.
