Gamescom has officially started in Cologne, Germany and that means plenty of game reveals, and announcements for games we’ve already seen. One early announcement came from Typhoon Studios, whose upcoming Journey to the Savage Planet received a release date for early next year. The co-op space adventure will be launching Jan 28, 2020 on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Players who pre-order the game will also get two in-game items: a cosmetic bobblehead for their player housing and a charm that grants increased loot drops.

Steering far from games that explore the vast grandeur of outer space, the horror of hostile aliens, or the absurdity of self-aggrandizing megacorporations, Journey to the Savage Planet looks like a much lighter take on space exploration. It puts players in the role of an explorer from Kindred Aerospace, which proudly advertises its status as the “4th Best Interstellar Exploration Company.” Looking superficially somewhat like No Man’s Sky, Journey to the Savage Planet is a first-person exploration game, where players chart a strange new world filled with bizarre creatures and a totally unique landscape. The ultimate goal is to catalog the local plants and animals to determine if the planet is fit for human colonization.

Journey to the Savage Planet focuses on discovering everything this single planet has to offer rather than zooming around the solar system. It will feature 2-player online co-op, letting players team up with a friend to examine the strange inhabitants of planet AR-Y 26 together.

What stands out most about Journey to the Savage Planet is its friendly, whimsical tone. While players are equipped with a blaster and other weaponry and there will be some dangerous creatures to contend with, the game overall is much more lighthearted than most and seems to put an emphasis on scanning and learning about the planet than conquering it. The addition of co-op could make Journey to the Savage Planet a solid choice for some relaxed gaming with friends, particularly for younger players.
