Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is a soft reboot to the series that has been so popular in the Call of Duty franchise, perhaps even more than Black Ops back in the days, but what does that mean specifically? Infinity Ward has explained that in an interesting interview released to IGN at the reveal event.

“That was a game that was sort of built on the aftermath of things like 9/11 and Operation Desert Storm, where you saw big phalanxes of tanks rolling across the desert fighting against other enemies that were wearing uniforms and were flying flags – it was sort of traditional, in a more modern sense,” narrative director Taylor Kurosaki said.

“The battlefield today doesn’t really even resemble that. Any city can become a warzone in the blink of an eye, and because of that there’s more collateral damage – civilians, airstrikes hitting their apartment complexes. So that was our leaping off point: how do we define Modern Warfare?”

On top of that, Kurosaki also explained that by the end of the trilogy, with Modern Warfare 3, the United States had been invaded by Russia, so that meant that the series had followed the uchronia path. Something that was sort of an irreversible change for the story and could not be returned back to with, say, a Modern Warfare 4 game.

The most interesting thing you might have noticed, though, is the return of well-known characters of the franchise, such as Captain Price. Price is the only one to have been officially confirmed, and this means the studio could explain how he is going to be portrayed in the game.

“When Price makes a decision about something, or says something or reacts to circumstances in a particular way, you as a long-time fan of the series should say ‘yep, that’s totally within character, that is exactly what Price would do in this moment,'” Kurosaki revealed.

“It needs to feel like the same guy who’s governed by the same principles. He’s a guy that’s not afraid to go rogue; he’s a guy that knows how to bend the rules to get things done. And he’s a guy that’s not afraid of lurking in the shadows and fighting along the margins in order to be effective.”

So, you should totally not worry about that, and even when other characters will be revealed to be part of the game, that will happen completely coherently with their previous appearances in the series. This is something we know you really care about, especially more characters such as Ghost have been teased about being part of the story.

Ghost was heavily mentioned in the pre-reveal period as part of the main cast, and Price himself says at the end of the trailer that he will be working with a squad he has already familiarity with. So, exclude him by that count, also considering how much appreciated he is, would make no sense.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is releasing on October 25, 2019 and is featuring a brand new engine for PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
