Rockstar Games, makers of industry dominating games like the GTA and Red Dead series, has announced it has acquired Indian studio Dhruva Interactive for $7.9 million from Starbreeze. The sale will give Rockstar possession of Starbreeze’s 91.82% share of Dhruva.

Dhruva Interactive was originally purchased by Starbreeze in 2016, for $8.5 million. Founded in 1997, the studio is one of the biggest game companies in India and will be working alongside Rockstar India. Before the acquisition by Starbreeze, Dhruva had amassed credits on games such as Halo 5, Forza Horizon 3, and Sea of Thieves.

Rockstar Games are the undisputed leaders of innovation and creativity in modern game development. Dhruva Interactive was founded with the aim of creating a world-class game development community in India, and so bringing the Dhruva team under the Rockstar Games label is further proof that we have succeeded in creating a talented team that can contribute to the best games in the world while helping to create a thriving local game developer community in India.

It has been a rough couple of years for Starbreeze, and the sale seems to be designed to inject some badly needed capital into the company. Last week, during the companies financial results for Q1, it was revealed that the company did not have the funds to last the year if they could not source new investment.

This comes after the failure of their Walking Dead game, and a raid on the company by Swedish authorities that saw computers and documents were seized. The cause of the raid was suspected insider trading, with one person being arrested. This happened two days after the former CEO, Bo Andersson Klint, stepped down and was replaced by Mikael Nermark as acting CEO. Nermark remains as CEO at this time.
