PS5: “SSD Key To Our Next Generation,” Says Sony

Thanks to the first unveil of the specifics in the making for PS5, we know for sure that it will come equipped with SSD.
Not only that, but the technology will be fundamental in how Sony sees the next generation of gaming as faster and possibly free of loading screens.
In a new statement issued to the Official PlayStation Magazine, a rep claimed that SSD will indeed be “the key to our next generation.”
“An ultra-high-speed SSD is the key to our next generation,” said the rep, going even further the initial reveal by Mark Cerny, the lead system architect.
“Our vision is to make loading screens a thing of the past, enabling creators to build new and unique gameplay experiences.”
While we don’t know whether this will be possible or not, as with games getting bigger and bigger loadings will, of course, become heavier to handle, this is a stepping point for PS5 for sure.
Just to give you an idea of how things could change, Marvel’s Spider-Man fast travels have been tested on a PS5-like dev kit and show that loading times have improved from the current PS4 Pro’s 15 seconds to 0.8 seconds.
So, while next-gen games will surely be more demanding than Spider-Man, it looks safe to state that action adventure titles, a genre where Sony is a leader lately, will get huge benefits from adopting SSD.
PS5 is expected to release in 2020.
