I have always felt vaguely robbed that I am alive during a time when robots are the future. I would be far happier to live in a time where robots were the present. The bigger the robot, and the more stuff it could smash, the better. This is why I have always enjoyed the Mechwarrior series. While not technically robots, they are good enough for me, and they smash a considerable amount of stuff when piloted correctly.

Mechwarrior 5: Mercenaries was supposed to launch this month, but had previously been delayed. Now we know the new release date is going to be September of next year. While this does seem to be a longer delay than the usual talk about “improving the experience” that PR people usually put out, all the early indications are that Mechwarrior 5 is going to be a whole lot of fun.

The trailers have done their part, but the word from people who have gotten to play the game so far is quite positive. Piranha Games are bringing the focus away from multiplayer for Mechwarrior 5, despite their Mechwarrior Online being a multiplayer-focused experience. We will see the return of singleplayer, and a four-person cooperative mode that I am very excited for. The only issue with the coop is that at the moment at least, it does not appear to result in shared progress. Still, it is nicer to have at least the option to get together with some friends, should you wish to do so.

For the most part, singleplayer Mech experiences live or die on two factors. The first is the moment to moment combat, the actual feel of piloting a massive machine of war; the second is how the management side of things plays out. I am hoping the campaign and management side will be deep and interesting. I will be curiously keeping my eye on this game from now until launch, so will keep you updated of any news that occurs.
