Santa Monica Studio’s God of War has taken up most of our time here at TL;DR Games over the past couple of weeks. Fortunately, the game is so good that the time has just flown by. It looks like we’re not alone in this as Sony have just announced that God of War has become the fastest selling PlayStation 4 exclusive ever, selling over 3.1 million units within the first three days of its release.

It’s great to see that God of War has become not only a critically acclaimed success – we’re just putting the finishing touches on our full review – but also a commercial one. Santa Monica Studio head Shannon Studstill made the following comment regarding its record breaking sales:

I would like to personally thank the millions of fans around the world who decided to embark on Kratos’ latest adventure with us. Your support is truly inspiring, and it’s a reason why we push ourselves every day to go beyond the boundaries of play. I’d also like to thank our Creative Director, Cory Barlog, and Director of Product Development, Yumi Yang and our entire amazing team at Santa Monica Studio. The belief in the game’s vision and the passion for storytelling across the team is undeniable. We look forward to hearing more about how fans are creating new memories of their favorite God of War gameplay moments that will be remembered for a long time.

Clearly the entire development team has been taken by the response of the fans, as evidenced by Cory Barlog’s response to the overwhelmingly positive reviews of God of War.

The God of War franchise has always been one of the standout exclusives for the PlayStation platform and the success of its latest iteration only cements Sony’s dominance when it comes to exclusive titles. Love or hate the idea of them, there is no doubt that excellent games like this will sell hardware units. 3.1 million copies sold in three days is a huge feat, regardless of platform or game, and everyone at Sony and Santa Monica Studio should be proud of their accomplishments.
