CD Projekt Red unveils first Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay trailer on livestream
Ana Valens In a surprise reveal on Twitch, CD Projekt Red unveiled a lengthy new gameplay trailer for Cyberpunk 2077 demonstrating the game’s character creation system, mission structure, open-world exploration, and fast-paced first-person shooter gameplay.
In the trailer, CD Projekt explored the game’s character creation options, including tattoos, makeup, facial feature customizations, in-game background, and main character “V.” The game features a “fluid class system” too, letting players change their character’s class as they play.
The demonstration showed off the game’s first-person perspective and in-game graphics. Players can approach missions in myriad ways, including silently dispatching enemies and shooting their way through opponents. Players have multiple dialogue options and an immersive UI system that seamlessly fades in and out of the player’s viewpoint.
Throughout the gameplay walkthrough, CD Projekt Red mentioned several upcoming features the studio is working on for Cyberpunk 2077. The development team is aiming for no loading screens throughout Night City, alongside a day and night cycle. Players can engage in open-world exploration outside of missions, and they can wear specific outfits from their apartment to simultaneously provide protection during combat and increase their street cred while walking through Night City. The game also features third-person cinematic scenes, letting players see their character wake up after a mission in their apartment, for example.
CD Projekt Red also introduced players to several lore aspects at the heart of Cyberpunk 2077’s world. Players can regularly stumble across crime happening in Night City and can randomly stumble across hostiles while walking the game’s streets. Players can also seamlessly go from walking on foot to riding in cars and bikes, among other vehicles, and players can shoot at enemies while in vehicles. Cars can be driven from a first-person perspective or from a third-person view.
Fans spent Monday morning puzzled by the stream’s cryptic code dump, until the trailer’s data was “uploaded” through a computer mainframe during the stream. To fans’ dismay, the data transmission stopped at 99 percent for several minutes, building anticipation and hype for the reveal.
August’s gameplay trailer is hot off the heels of Gamescom 2018, which brought a new wave of previews for Cyberpunk 2077 from gaming journalists. CD Projekt Red found itself under scrutiny earlier this month after Cyberpunk 2077’s Twitter posted a transphobic joke, sparking backlash from fans concerned about the game’s take on gender identity and how it’d blend into the cyberpunk setting.
Cyberpunk 2077 does not have a release date, but is coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
