The Virtual Console will not be coming to the Nintendo Switch

The Nintendo Switch will not be getting its own version of the Virtual Console system, a Nintendo spokesperson has told Kotaku.
The Virtual Console has existed in every Nintendo console with Wi-Fi support since the Nintendo Wii back in 2006. The service provided a host of retro games from the NES era all the way up until the Nintendo GBA for players to purchase and download.
There are a few Retro games currently available on the Nintendo Switch to purchase, such as titles from the Metal Slug series and a host of remade games.
Nintendo recently announced that a host of NES games would be available for its Nintendo Switch Online Service. The NES library will initially include 20 games at launch which include titles like Balloon Fight, Dr. Mario, and Super Mario Bros. 3, with more game being added to the library in the future for all online subscribers.
“Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Switch Online will provide a fun new way to experience classic NES games that will be different from the Virtual Console service,” the Nintendo spokesperson told Kotaku. “Thanks to enhancements such as added online play, voice chat via the Nintendo Switch Online app and the various play modes of Nintendo Switch.”
The Online Service will go live this September and Nintendo Switch owners will be forced to sign up for it if they want to continue to play multiplayer games such as Splatoon 2, ARMS, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and Mario Tennis Aces.
