Sonic Origins’ collection of remastered classic Sonic the Hedgehog games from the Sega Genesis and CD will bring back a lot of nostalgia for 90s gamers. The Anniversary versions of these games add in new features that make the experience more in line with something you would see released today and more enjoyable overall. However, the lock-on technology feature included with Sonic & Knuckles on the Sega Genesis would allow you to play as characters as you normally couldn’t in other Sonic games. Does Sonic Origins let you play through Sonic the Hedgehog 1 and CD as Tails and Knuckles?
Can you play as Tails and Knuckles in Sonic 1 and CD in Sonic Origins?
With the original release of Sonic the Hedgehog 1 and Sonic CD, the blue blur was the only character you could play as because Tails and Knuckles had not yet been introduced when those games came out. However, with Sonic and Knuckles, you could attach your cartridges together and play as Knuckles in Sonic 1 and Sonic 2. Sega has gone a step further with Sonic Origins, though.

You can play as Tails and Knuckles in Sonic 1 and 2, with new title screens appearing when you select them and return to that location. In the second game, you can even combine them as a team. Oddly enough, though, in Sonic CD, only Sonic and Tails are playable, no Knuckles. We have no explanation for this. Sega brought Tails into the mix with the 2011 re-release of the game, so you would think it would be easy to port that over, but they didn’t for whatever reason.
At the main menu, when you select Start on any game, you will be brought to that game’s title screen. When you begin, you are given a character selection screen. If you ever want to change your character, just come back to this screen and start the adventure over or input the level select code.
