Warner Bros has decided to remove all Microtransactions element in Middle-Earth: Shadow of War six months after the release of the game.
Today’s unexpected new is the announcement of Shadow of War removing all the microtransactions included since launch in the latest Middle-earth based video game by Monolith Productions and Warner Bros.
The developer will be removing all the microtransactions and heavily reworking the Shadow Wars endgame activity as early as July 17, the deadline for gamers to put their much sweated gold to good use before it expires.
“In order to fully restore the core promise of the Nemesis System, we’ll be permanently removing Gold, War Chests and the Market from Shadow of War. This means the option to purchase Gold with real-world money and the ability to gain Orc Followers from War Chests will be removed,” a portion of the long open letter issued by the makers of the game says.
“There will be a specific amount of time given for players to utilize their unused Gold. If players have unused Gold by the end of the time allotted to spend it, any remaining Gold will be converted to in-game items.”
On top of that, here’s how the Shadow Wars will work since the update removing microtransactions releases this July:
“For players who have already started the Shadow Wars, it will restart upon receiving the update. For players who have already completed the Shadow Wars, it will remain completed. For players who have yet to begin the Shadow Wars, the new version will be available when they arrive at that point in the game.”
Shadow of War was among the few games, together with Star Wars Battlefront II and Forza Motorsport 7, which sparked the controversy of microtransactions in video games last year, and it’s interesting to note that it is making this u-turn when it’s become slowly and slowly less relevant in the gaming landscape.
Whether it is a move to gain some momentum, maybe pointing at a definitive edition/GOTY releasing sometime this year, or a genuine will to hear players’ feedback after all this time, it’s good for players that they have the opportunity to play the game without something they despise.
