Now that the PlayStation 5 is officially a thing and coming next holiday season, it’s time to start talking about what games would be ideal for its launch. We’re going to see a handful of souped-up PlayStation 4 games for re-releases, such as The Last of Us Part II and Marvel’s Spider-Man. But this is also a prime opportunity to talk about sequels that could steal the spotlight.

There are apparent givens, like follow-ups to God of War and Horizon: Zero Dawn, which we’ll discuss here. But there are also some franchises that we haven’t seen in years and deserve their place in the spotlight again.

So let’s look at five key franchises that deserve a sequel for the PlayStation 5. Whether we’ll get them in time for next year’s launch has yet to be seen, but it never hurts to dream, does it?

5 Sequels That Would Be Ideal On PlayStation 5

PS5

Sly Cooper

Can you believe it’s been six years since we’ve seen an entry in the Sly Cooper series? Thieves In Time was the last game to be released; and though it wasn’t worked on by the team at Sucker Punch (who’s hard at work on Ghosts of Tsushima), Sanzaru Games did an amazing job nevertheless.

So it’s time for this thief’s return. For that matter, he needs to bring his crew with him, along with a number of his adversaries. The PlayStation 5 seems like a proper place for him too, ahem, steal the show with a Thieves In Time follow-up, busting the seams with amazing visuals and fun stealth/platforming gameplay.

PS5

Jak and Daxter

A couple of years ago, Sony graciously delivered the Jak and Daxter Collection to PlayStation 4, with several PlayStation 2 re-releases. While not quite the remasters that we were looking for, the games are a lot of fun nevertheless. And they have us wondering if the company is still planning to do something with the franchise.

True, Naughty Dog is busy wrapping up The Last of Us Part II. But imagine if its next project is a return to the franchise that helped put them on the map, to begin with, with a stunning open-world to explore and plenty of antics between the two main stars. We miss our Daxter wisecracks.

Fingers crossed that the developers have something planned here – because the fans genuinely need it.

PS5

God of War

Of course, we need Kratos. Just when we thought the beginning God of War games were excellent, along came the 2018 adventure, which completely floored us. Packed with amazing quality in one long-running shot, and filled with the kind of action that would make Thor blush (we think?), God of War is one of the defining games in the PlayStation era.

And although it’ll be a while before we see a real follow-up, you know that Cory Barlog and his team are probably well into the planning stages for the sequel, which could be even bigger and better with the PlayStation 5 hardware. And for that matter, nothing is stopping the team from re-releasing the original games on the PS5 to show how much better they can become.

Bring it, Kratos.

PS5

Portal 3/Left 4 Dead 3

This may be a long shot because Portal 2 already wrapped up the way it did, but you never know with Valve. Years ago, the company worked hand-in-hand with Sony to make the sequel work like a charm on the PlayStation 3. So…pairing up with them again for a surprise sequel wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world.

But while Gabe Newell being able to count to “3” would be a pretty big deal, Portal 3 would likely be the game that he does it with. It’d be an ideal follow-up for the PS5, showing off even more intricate levels than ever before, along with new and returning characters (GLaDOS, is that you?!) to keep things interesting.

Why stop there, though? For that matter, there’s also the possibility of seeing the Left 4 Dead franchise return. We could see the first two games nicely remastered for the PS5, or, dare we say it, a third chapter that’s set to blow away all our expectations.

There may be a lot of dreaming happening here. But if Valve and Sony could work their magic before, they sure can do it again.

PS5

Spider-Man, Ratchet & Clank or Sunset Overdrive

Now, Insomniac is a hard company to predict. When you think they’re going to zig, they end up zagging. Right after they provided a piece of magic with Ratchet & Clank on the PS4, they produced Sunset Overdrive for the Xbox One. And now we have Marvel’s Spider-Man, its most accomplished game to date, chock full of stuff for the web-slinger to do.

So what does it have planned for PlayStation 5? Your guess is as good as ours. An upgraded version of Spider-Man could be in the cards. But knowing Insomniac, they could go several ways. A new Ratchet & Clank would be remarkable, especially if it’s an entirely original adventure like Into the Nexus was. For that matter, a sequel to Spider-Man would be welcome, though it’d be some time before we see it.

And then…there’s Sunset Overdrive. Say you want about the game not selling well when it first came out, but the PlayStation 5 is a whole different beast. Releasing a powerful new version of the original game on that hardware would make it a real looker – and give Sony an edge over Microsoft in terms of exclusivity. Let’s not forget the potential for a sequel, too – there are miles of terrain to cover there.

Whatever Sony has planned, it’s sure to be a treat for gamers. Let’s just hope it’s the return of some franchises we’ve been waiting to see. Hey, while we’re at it, MotorStorm? Nahhhh
