Who is Yuffie in Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade? – backstory, gameplay, and Sonon details

Yuffie will be infiltrating Midgar with Avalanche in search of Materia.

A Final Fantasy VII Remake DLC episode starring Yuffie Kisaragi was revealed alongside Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade on PlayStation, which stars the fan-favorite ninja from Wutai. Originally an optional character in Final Fantasy VII, Yuffie is now officially in her own official adventure with a new character named Sonon Kusakabe.

Yuffie’s backstory

In the original game, Yuffie is a Materia hunter who can be encountered in various forests and is trying to restore her homeland to its former glory. Because of her status as an optional character, she had no impact on the main story but became popular with fans due to her upbeat and optimistic attitude. However, it seems that now the DLC will be changing that as she meets and briefly works with Cloud and Barret before separating to accomplish her own goals.

Who is Sonon?

The recent Famitsu interview with Remake director Tetsuya Nomura revealed that Sonon is another member of Avalanche who accompanies Yuffie on a mission that occurs simultaneously to Cloud and Barret’s own story. Yuffie infiltrates Midgar for a certain purpose that’s related to Materia, which makes sense, as she’s always on the hunt for rare and valuable Materia. There’s also a bonus easter egg in the trailer — Nomura points out that the Moogle Food outfit that she wears as a disguise is a reference to Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII.

In the original game, Yuffie wielded a giant shuriken, which allowed for ranged attacks, and her limit breaks tended to target multiple enemies. During battle in Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, unlike in the main game, you can fully control Yuffie but you can’t directly control Sonon. You command him through Tactical Mode and perform cooperative attacks with him, differing quite a bit from Remake’s base combat.
